If you’re planning a trip to the Smoky Mountains and wondering about the things to do in the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, look no further.
Here are a few of our favorites that we feel are must do’s when visiting the area!!!!
Dollywood
No visit to Pigeon Forge is complete without a day at Dollywood, the iconic theme park co-owned by country legend Dolly Parton. With over 50 world-class rides, award-winning shows, craft demonstrations, and mouthwatering food, Dollywood captures the heart of the Smokies.
Originally opened in 1961 as Rebel Railroad, the park evolved over the years and was eventually rebranded as Silver Dollar City Tennessee in 1977. It wasn’t until 1986, when Dolly Parton became involved, that the park was transformed into what we now know as Dollywood. Her vision brought new life, drawing millions each year.
Highlights include the thrilling Wild Eagle, America’s first wing coaster, and Lightning Rod, the world’s fastest wooden coaster. If you’re visiting during the holidays, don’t miss Smoky Mountain Christmas, where the park shines bright with over six million lights, festive performances, and a larger-than-life Christmas wonderland.
Grist Mill & the Famous Cinnamon Bread
Tucked inside the park is the Dollywood Grist Mill, a working mill built in 1982, which serves up one of the park’s most legendary treats: Dollywood’s Cinnamon Bread. Baked fresh daily, this warm, gooey loaf is coated with cinnamon and sugar and served with icing or apple butter. It’s a sweet way to round out your Dollywood visit—and many say it’s worth the trip all by itself!
Anakeesta
For stunning views and outdoor adventure, Anakeesta in downtown Gatlinburg is a can’t-miss destination. Ride the Chondola—a hybrid lift with both open-air chairs and enclosed gondolas—to the summit of Anakeesta Mountain, where magic awaits.
Explore the Treetop Skywalk, the longest tree-based bridge system in North America, suspended 50–60 feet in the air and stretching over 880 feet. It’s not a ropes course or obstacle challenge—just a peaceful, elevated stroll through the treetops with jaw-dropping views.
For kids and adventure-lovers, the TreeVenture Challenge Course, Dueling Ziplines, and Rail Runner Mountain Coaster offer thrills at every turn.
AnaVista Tower: Views That Stretch for Miles
Make your way to the AnaVista Tower, the highest point in downtown Gatlinburg. This stunning observation tower stands 600 feet above town and offers 360-degree panoramic views of the Smoky Mountains—stretching as far as Kentucky on clear days. It’s one of the best places to soak in the natural beauty of the Smokies.
Astra Lumina: Nighttime Magic in the Mountains
After dark, the forest transforms with Astra Lumina, an immersive nighttime walk through a glowing world of cosmic lights and celestial soundscapes. This awe-inspiring experience is the first of its kind in the U.S. and turns Anakeesta into an enchanted starlit dream.
The Island in Pigeon Forge
Located right in the heart of Pigeon Forge, The Island is a vibrant entertainment complex that’s perfect for families, couples, and groups. It features over 60 retail and specialty shops, restaurants, attractions, and live music.
Don’t miss a ride on The Great Smoky Mountain Wheel, a 200-foot-tall observation wheel offering scenic views of the mountains. Time it right and you can see the sunset from your gondola. Grab dinner at Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen, enjoy a moonshine tasting, or just kick back by the fountains choreographed to music and lights.
Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies
Rated one of the top aquariums in the country, Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies is home to thousands of sea creatures from around the world. From shark tunnels to the penguin exhibit, this immersive attraction is a hit with kids and adults alike. Located in downtown Gatlinburg, it’s the perfect stop for families and marine life lovers.
